Accordion fold:
Bindery term, two or more parallel folds which open like an accordion. accordian
Acrobat:
Full version of Adobe Acrobat software designed to view and work with PDF files.
Acrobat Distiller:
A component of Adobe Acrobat that creates PDF files from PostScript files.
Acrobat Reader:
Free version of Adobe Acrobat software designed only for viewing PDF files.
Software manufacture that produces Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other Graphic software.
Against the grain:
At right angles to direction of paper grain.
Application:
Computer program, such as InDesign, Word, Quark Xpress.
Author’s Alteration:
Change in copy of specifications after production has begun that is requested by the customer as opposed to an error on the printer’s behalf.
Back up:
Printing the second side of a sheet already printed on one side.
Bindery:
The finishing department of a print shop or firm specializing in finishing printed products.
Bitmap:
Another term for Raster image. Also a file format (BMP) restricted to a limited palette of RGB colors.
Bleed:
Printing that goes to the edge of the sheet after trimming. Jobs that you wish to bleed must extend 1/8” beyond the final trim size of your document.

Bond paper:
Strong durable paper grade used for letterheads and business forms.
Break for color:
Also known as a color break. To separate mechanically or by software the parts to be printed in different colors.
Brightness:
The brilliance or reflectance of paper.
Bulk:
Thickness of paper stock in thousandths of an inch or number of pages per inch.
Camera-ready copy:
Printed out hard copy that require no edits or additional preparation before going to press.
Case bind:
A type of binding used in making hard cover books using glue.
Chrome:
A high-resolution proof that is color-accurate and will be used as a matchprint for press. Also a traditional term for a transparency.
CMYK:
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK (or actually K for Key which is Black). The four colors used to generate color images in printing.
