Harry M. Rowe with Terry Hoffer

The Grass Grew Greener

After college and medical school through the Great Depression, Dr. Rowe joined the Army Medical
Corps and served in the dark days of The War in Europe. Second only to being back in Mary’s arms,
Harry wished for the chance to be a good general practitioner in a small Vermont town.

Every once in a while someone like Harry Rowe comes along and stands as an example of everything
we mean when we teach our students the importance of compassion in medicine.
Frederick C. Morin III M.D.
Dean of UVM’s College of Medicine

Here is Dr. Rowe’s story after 60-years as the enormously popular town doctor in Wells River, Vermont.
As a physician, husband, father and the longest serving school board member in America, Dr. Rowe
defines good citizenship at the highest level.
