“It is reported that the skating rink building has of late been the principal “catch on” place in town;
that the fair ones of Venus would congregate there in the afternoon, and make appointments for evening
with their Apollos. There are small blots of blood on the moon, and hair-pulling has become an everyday
transaction.” ~ Montpelier Argus and Patriot, Wednesday, June 16, 1886
The above is just one of many news articles, important or otherwise, quoted in local historian Russell
Belding’s first book. A comprehensive look at each of the buildings of a small New England city’s main
thoroughfare over a 40-year period, “From Hitching Posts to Gas Pumps”.
Longtime Barre resident Russell Belding has had a lifelong fascination with the history of his immediate
surroundings.
